What is RFID?

Learn about RFID from the comfort of your office with our comprehensive multimedia program - RFID 101.

RFID, or Radio Frequency IDentification, makes it possible to locate the right item at the right place at the right time. From asset management to inventory tracking to supply chain management, RFID allows companies to "optimize the procurement, manufacture, distribution, sale and tracking of products," (per EPCglobal) integrating the "last mile" of the chain with the live area – be it a store shelf, a distribution center load dock or a factory floor.

Major retailers, the U.S. government and industrial and consumer goods manufacturers believe in the power of RFID to greatly improve the efficiency of their inventory management and tracking systems. RFID will help count, track, locate and secure objects moving through supply chains faster, more accurately and (perhaps most important) at a much lower cost than traditional inventory management technologies (such as barcode-based systems).

To find out more about RFID and its many uses throughout the supply chain, see our RFID Frequently Asked Questions reference section, which provides answers to questions regarding RFID functionality, frequencies, inlay and tag construction, testing and other related topics.
